Dallas-Fort Worth was listed #48, although the bone I have to pick with that is the fact that it’s considered ONE city. They comment on it’s size (“the metro area is the size of Rhode Island and Connecticut combined”) so I fail to see how that’s fair. Ah, well… let’s go buy some non-fiction books to help us out! Austin’s #12 & even HOUSTON beats us by a few

In a first for Texas, a judge ruled Thursday that two men married in another state can divorce here and that the state’s ban on gay marriage violates the U.S. Constitution.

three50eight:

Hi.  I need to take a break from the lulz tonight to talk about something that has been bothering me since I found out about it.  To my suprise I haven’t even seen that much about it on Tumblr but it is an issue that I know touches many of my followers.  Rather than re-invent the wheel I’m going to borrow what Dan Savage published this week in his column:

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY: The police in Fort Worth, Texas, marked the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall rebellion by raiding a gay bar called the Rainbow Lounge. One of the men arrested, Chad Gibson, was so brutally assaulted by the police that, as of this writing, he remains hospitalized with a life-threatening brain injury.

Police Chief Jeff Halstead claims that the men at the Rainbow Lounge made lewd advances toward his officers and specifically accused Gibson, a slight 26-year-old, of groping one of his cops. This preposterous claim is contradicted by eyewitness accounts and photographic evidence.

We can’t let the police in Fort Worth use the Gay Panic Defense (“That fag touched me, so of course I beat him nearly to death!”) to excuse this brutal violation of the civil rights of Fort Worth’s gay community. If you’re on Facebook, please show your support by joining the Rainbow Lounge Raid group (www.tinyurl.com/lavecu). And please e-mail or call the mayor of Fort Worth—Mike Moncrief, 817-392-6118, mike.moncrief@fortworthgov.org—and demand a full investigation into the raid on the Rainbow Lounge.

When I read this I was enraged.  I’d like to think that in the last 40 years we have made great strides in the fight for equality and acceptance but incidents like this prove that we have a long way to go.  I strongly agree with Dan that we cannot stand idle and let this type of brutality continue.  I’m urging each and every one of you to please call, please write, please join the facebook group, rally, reblog this, and educate yourself.  Voicing your opinion is the most important thing you can do right now.  DEMAND CHANGE!

UPDATE 3: Via Slog commenter jasonzenobia: The Fort Worth Police Department’s email address is fwpdweb@fortworthpd.com and the number for FWPD’s internal affairs office is 817.392.4270. That’s the number to call to report officer misconduct. Joel Burns is the openly gay member of the Fort Worth city council and he’s been all over this. You can reach him at his email is Joel.Burns@fortworthgov.org.

UPDATE 4: I’ve heard from folks in Fort Worth that Joel Burns’ office is being slammed with furious phone calls and emails about the raid on the Rainbow Lounge and the assault on Chad Gibson. Burns, however, has taken action on this and has called for an investigation and is doing everything an openly-gay elected official is supposed to do in a circumstance like this. If you’re itching to send an outraged emails, Sloggers, I’d urge you to send emails to the six Fort Worth councilmembers who haven’t joined with Burns and two of his colleagues in calling for a full and independent investigation into the appalling raid on the Rainbow Lounge.

Councilmember W.B. ‘Zim’ Zimmerman
817-392-8803
District3@fortworthgov.org

Councilmember Danny Scarth
817-392-8804
District4@fortworthgov.org

Councilmember Frank Moss
817-392-8805
District5@fortworthgov.org

Councilmember Jungus Jordan
817-392-8806
District6@fortworthgov.org

Councilmember Carter Burdette
817-392-8807
District7@fortworthgov.org

And send an email to the mayor, Mike Moncreif, who has yet to make a statement:

Mayor Mike Moncrief
817-392-6118
mike.moncrief@fortworthgov.org

Tell them the whole country is shocked and outraged and that you’re appalled by their failure to join their colleagues Joel Burns, Sal Espino, and Kathleen Hicks in calling for an investigation into the raid on the Rainbow Lounge and the assault on Chad Gibson

— via Christopher

This is important for us to take action on. They need to know that their fellow Texans are disappointed with this too.

Foursquare helps you find new ways to explore your city. See where your friends are, learn about the places they frequent and unlock rewards as you travel through the city.

You may have heard about it from other Tumblr users or seen it in the iPhone App Store, but weren’t sure what it was all about.

The DFW Metroplex is now on the site, so sign up and start checking in and earning badges! You can add me as a friend here
